Obituary of Alfred C. Smith

Al Smith from Masten Lake and Mt. Prosper died peacefully on Feb. 18, 2011. Born on June 1st, 1929 in New Jersey, Al, with his parents Clayton and Sylvia Frickel Smith, moved to Mt. Prosper. Al attended the one room schoolhouse at Yankee Lake. After graduating from Monticello High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, stationed in Key West Florida where he instructed electronics. After the navy he worked for New York Telephone Company as a central office technician and switchman. Al lived a full life and was a gifted with amazing intelligence which he used to enjoy life beyond what most could imagine. He was an expert pilot, boater, scuba diver, photographer and marksman. He also enjoyed collecting and restoring jukeboxes, antique outboard motors and music from the Big Band Era. Al was well known for his generosity in sharing his beloved Boat House at Masten Lake with all his close friends. Al is survived by a cousin, Claire MacBride from Lake Alpatcon, NJ and close friends Bill Norton and Mike Florio. Visitation will be held between 2-4pm on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011 at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro. His funeral service will follow at 4pm at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Meyer officiating. Burial will follow immediately after at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro followed by a celebration of his life at Danny's Restaurant.
