Obituary of Richard B. Gregory
Richard Bernard Gregory passed away in the early hours of Friday January 3, 2025. He was 96 years old.
He was born on March 24, 1928 to William and Mary Gregory, alongside his twin sister Florence. He grew up on the family farm with his three older brothers, William, George and Edward. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1945. He worked as a plumber’s assistant before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served four years, two of which were served overseas in Japan. Upon returning from Japan, he met his wife Jane Kestler and they were married in June 1957. They spent 67 years happily married. Dick also spent 38 years working for the United States Post Office before retiring. After retiring, he spent an additional 15 years revising his role as a plumber’s assistant for his lifelong friend Don Sargent. He was the true patriarch of the family, a stoic man who cared deeply about his loved ones. He was also a member of the Ruddick Trowbridge American Legion Post #73, the Monticello Masons Lodge #532 and White Oak Hunting Camp. He most enjoyed working outdoors, hunting, and telling stories from his youth. His family will deeply miss his boisterous laugh, his love for the Yankees…..and his gentle heart.
He is predeceased by his parents, William and Mary, his brothers William, George, and Edward, and his sister Florence. He is survived by his beloved wife Jane; his children, Karen (Frank), Richard (Kathryn), Teresa (William) and Lisa; his grandchildren: Jennifer (Jesse), Lorraine (Michael), Matthew (Patricia), Gregory, Brittany, Courtney, and Gabrielle; as well as his great-grandchildren: Ethan, Kelsey, Madison, Amelia, Ronin, and Alina. He will also live in the hearts of his brothers- and sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. His family would like to extend thanks to his home health aides, Christine and Linda for all of their compassion, hard work, love and patience.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 8 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9 at 11am at the First Church of Monticello, Presbyterian, 11 Jones Street in Monticello. Burial with military honors will follow at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
