Reverend John Joseph Gallo
John J. Gallo, 96; Minister of the Glendale United Christian Church answered his Lord's call Home on September 10,2009 in Wurtsboro at the home of his son David and family.. John was born Dionysius Joseph Gallo on July 28, 1913 in Brooklyn, NY; son of Dionisio Antonio Gallo of Potenza, Italy and Rosanna Kenedy of Coxsakie, NY.
John was a soldier in two legions, first & foremost the Calvary of His Lord Jesus Christ & secondly the New York State National Guard and then United States Army during World War II-attached to the 718th Field Artillery Battalion, 63rd Infantry Division. During his service, he met his wife Mavis Elizabeth Puryear of Hopewell, VA; love at first sight at a religious revival and cost his mother-in-law her flock of chickens for Sunday dinners. They were married February 28,1946 in Baltimore, MD. They were married 55 years when Mavis was called Home on December 22, 2001. John devoted his entire life in service of his family and Lord. He faithfully followed His call into many professions including a position as the Night Manager at The Plaza Hotel in New York City and preaching on the streets of New York City - attached to the MacCauley Mission & his perch on the Corner of Wall Street @ the Banker's Trust Building. He brought many souls to His Savior.
John is survived by his Congregation at Glendale United Christian Church . He is survived by his children: Judith Brader of Hoboken, NJ; Mary (Douglas)Mace of Phillipsburg, NJ; Robert (Renate)Gallo of Sayville, NY; John(Patricia) Gallo of Flushing, NY; Ruth (Eugene) Cassidy of Glendale, NY; Daniel (Denise)Gallo of Kings Park, NY; David (Judy) Gallo of Wurtsboro, NY; Rebecca (Olav) Refvik of Westport, CT and Deborah Gallo of Monticello, NY. He is also survived by 18 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandchild, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded Home by his children Sharon Rose and Stephen Paul Gallo, siblings Mary Schrieber, Anna Pyle, William, Robert and Norbert Gallo. Memorial Service for the Celebration of John's life will be held at Glendale United Christian Church on Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 6-9pm & funeral services at the George Werst Funeral Home at 7141 Cooper Avenue, Glendale,NY 10am followed by interment be at All Faith Cemetery, Glendale, NY on Monday September 14, 2009.
