Obituary of Hildur Hindley
Please share a memory of Hildur to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Hildur Salomon Hindley, formerly of Monticello, N.Y., died at Mercy Crest Retirement Living Facility in Barling, Arkansas, surrounded by her loving son and family and devoted caregivers on January 24th.
She was born in Manhattan, NY on September 26, 1917 to the late Louis and Erika Carlson Salomon.
Hildur attended school in NYC and after the family brought Miss Monticello Diner to Sullivan County, graduated Monticello High School in 1936. Earning a nursing degree at Vassar, she specialized as a surgical nurse. Alongside Dr. Heins, she last worked at Hamilton Avenue Hospital and did private specialty nursing.
She met and married the late Arthur L. Hindley in 1943 while he was in US Army service until 1945. He co-managed the family diner business with Carl Salomon.
On Starr Avenue they raised four children and she later cared for her husband after his stroke. She went back to work after his death in 1977. Some will remember 'Hilda' at Crawford Housing or as the cashier at Gager's Diner until it closed. She visited and remained in Arkansas with family after surviving her battle with cancer.
Those close to her will remember her strength, devotion, wit, and kindness. Grandchildren and friends will remember perfectly knitted sweaters, personalized afghan blankets and, like her mother before her, the best pies in Sullivan.
Hildur was predeceased by her husband Arthur, her brother Carl Salomon, Emma Sturgis, and her very special grandchild, Jesse Bogart Bibb-Hindley.
She is survived by her children Judith (and Louis) Parlo of Elmira, NY, Barton (and Trudy) of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Glenn of Louisville, Colorado, and Suzanne (and Steve) White of Mongaup Valley, NY; her grandchildren, Laurie (David) Brown, Todd (Lori) Parlo, Anthony (Tricia) Parlo, Lisa, Ryan and Brandon Parlo, Scott (Michele) Hindley, Brad (Wendy) Hindley, and Tyler and Logan White; her Great Grandchildren, Anthony and Sara Brown, Leo Parlo, Damien Parlo, AJ and Noah Hindley, and Braeden and Bryce Hindley; Linnea Salomon and extended family, Harold, Richard, and Patty Sturgis Rauch and family, relatives in Sweden, and Cecile Klemen and family.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 29 from 5-7pm and on Friday, January 30 from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, January 30 at 1:00pm at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Jay Wallace officiating. Burial will follow in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Crest Retirement Living, 1300 Strozier Lane, Barling, Arkansas 72923.
