Obituary of Les Smith

Leslie "Les" Smith, a retired police chief for the Village of Monticello, died Thursday, January 26, 2017 at his daughter's home in Columbia, SC. He was 96. The son of the late Fred Smith and Marian Anderson Smith, he was born May 13, 1920 in Liberty, NY. He was the widower of Josephine who predeceased him in 1995. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during WWII in the Pacific. He was a member of the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department, VFW and Monticello Elks. He lived his life facing all adversities with the conviction that you must "play the hand you are dealt". His strength, kindness and honor were always his family's cornerstone. He is survived by two daughters: Laura Green of Columbia, SC and Diane Haughney and her husband Kevin of Lakeland, Florida; four grandchildren; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was predeceased by brothers, Herbert, Albert, Kenneth, Walter, Marvin, Bernard; and sister Laura. His memorial mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 6 at 10am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty streets in Monticello. Interment of his ashes with military honors will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.
