Obituary of Nicholas A. Pavone

Nicholas Albert Pavone of Wurtsboro, longtime resident of the area, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 88. The son of the late Angelo Pavone and Anna Calabrese Pavone, he was born September 6, 1924 and raised in Brooklyn, retiring to Wurtsboro years later. Nick was a proud WWII Army veteran infantryman assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, participating in the D-Day Normandy invasion as well as the campaign to liberate Holland in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for actions during these battles. In November 2011, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor, the highest honor presented to a non-French citizen. Nicholas and his wife Patricia volunteered at the Chase Elementary School in Wurtsboro. His passions included hunting, fishing and barbequing, and he was an accomplished self taught artist. Nick is survived by his wife of 68 years: Patricia Driscoll Pavone, at home; a son: Bill Pavone & his wife Teena of Brooklyn; a daughter: Nancy Pavone & her husband Glen of Brooklyn; two grandchildren: Nicole Smith & her husband Graham, and William Pavone & his wife Jessica; his great grandchildren: Cameron, Paige and Riley Smith, and Soula Pavone; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son: Robert; and two sisters: Josephine Donofrio and Millie Noto. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, May 2 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 3 at 10am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
