Obituary of Daniel Fero

Daniel Fero, a retired senior detective for the Monticello Police Dept., died on Friday, September 25, 2015 at this home in Monticello. He was 74. The son of the late Orlando J. Fero Sr. and Julia Murran Fero Voelkers, he was born March 25, 1941 in Brooklyn. Danny ("Big Daddy") graduated from Monticello High School in 1959 and enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1962 he joined the Monticello Police Dept as a patrolman, eventually retiring in 1998 as senior detective. In that time he married Helen Bates Solomon, and loved her children as his own. He was also a member of the Monticello Elk's Lodge #1544; Bear Paw Hunting Camp; and the Monticello PBA. Danny is survived by his wife: Helen, at home; (step) daughter: Franci Solomon-Kirtack, who called him "Daddy Dan"; and his "favorite" son-in-law: Paul Kirtack, both of Monticello; a brother: Andrew J. Fero & his wife Bonnie of Dunnellon, FL; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins, both here and in Florida; and many friends. In addition to his mother and father, he was predeceased by a stepson: Scott Solomon; a brother: Orlando J. "Lanny" Fero; and his stepfather: Karl Voelkers. Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, September 29 from 3-6pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral service will be held at 6pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Following cremation, interment of his ashes will be held at a later date at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Monticello PBA, P.O. Box 1122, Monticello, NY 12701 to benefit local children's programs.
