Joseph G. Ryan, Sr. formerly of Wurtsboro and Washingtonville, NY, a retired New York City Transit Police Officer, District 3 Anti-Crime Unit and retired Police Officer at Montrose Veteran's Hospital, died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in Liberty, NY. He was 76. The son of the late Joseph and Ita Hogan Ryan, He was born October 13, 1938 in Limerick City, Ireland, the youngest of nine children. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was proud to be an American Citizen. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Ryan in 1997. Dad was one of the hardest working men that ever walked this earth. He loved his family and provided for them the best way he possibly could. Joseph is survived by his children, Mary Ryan Buchholz and her husband, Scott, Joseph Ryan and his wife Marlene, James Ryan & his fiancé Macbeth, Catherine Egenes and her husband Glenn, Eileen Fata and her husband Dominick, John Ryan and his wife Kara. Grandchildren Michele Buchholz and her fiancé Daniel Friedman, Tyler Buchholz, Faith and Liam Ryan, Jimmy, Robert and Donald Ryan and his wife Kate, Bjorn Egenes and his fiancé Kara King and Christopher Egenes and his fiancé Hajriji Sinonaj, Nicholas Fata, Michael and Daniel Ryan and soon to be born great grandson. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, especially Maureen Ryan Onorato. He is also survived by his beloved sisters Carrie Ryan and Imelda Levine, brothers Joachim and Clement Ryan. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his brother Thomas and sisters Maura, Theresa and Phyllis. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, September 3 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 4 at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
