Obituary of Andrew Smith

Andrew "Doc" Smith Sr., of Middletown departed this life on Tuesday February 3rd 2015 at home. He was 77. He was born March 29th, 1937 to the late Vernell "Pete" Smith and Emma Watson Smith of Bromley, Alabama. Andrew better known as "Doc" or "Doc Red" to those that knew him was employed with the Monticello Central School District for many years until he retired and relocated to Daphne, Alabama where he spent most of his retirement years. In 2013 Andrew returned to Monticello and then moved to Middletown to live with his daughter, and he established a close relationship with his grandson Tonii Fasenntao who became his confidante. He is survived by his wife and friend Virginia Smith of Monticello; five sons: Andrew (Mattie) Smith of Columbus GA, Michael Smith of Port Jervis, Brian Smith of Monticello, Alan (Nicole) Smith of Kiamesha Lake and Kerry Smith of Middletown; four daughters: Gloria (Paul) Sledge of Bromley AL, Doreen Smith of Middletown, Darlene Smith of Monticello and Gloria Smith of Liberty; one brother: Leon Smith of St. Louis IL, and two sisters: Claretha Smith-Robertson and Beula Smith of Bromley AL; sixteen grandchildren; and several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Isaac Zeek Smith. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13th 2015 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Bethlehem Temple Church, Fairground Road in Monticello. His funeral service will begin at 12:00pm at the church with Bishop Mervin Armstead officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello.
