Obituary of Peter H. Cahalan

Peter Cahalan, gentleman, scholar, and a fine judge of scotch whiskey died Friday, February 6, 2015 at his home in Monticello. He was 77. Peter was a retired bank vice president, and a lifelong area resident. The son of the late Matthew Cahalan and Marie Washington Cahalan, he was born December 25, 1937 in Monticello. Peter graduated from Monticello Central School where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and cross country. He attended OCCC and Bucknell University –School of Banking. A veteran of the United States Army, Pete was a third degree Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, Past Treasurer and 50 year member of BPOE #1544, Past President and Treasurer of Cliff Lodge Hunting Camp, Past President and Treasurer of the Monticello Softball League, Captain of Roark's Tavern Softball Team, and Bend N Elbow Old Timers Team, Treasurer of Wednesday Night Golf League, Member of Tuesday Night Golf League, Member of the Wyde Lumber Bowling Team, and an11-year member of the Monticello Central School Board. He was known to many for his vast sports trivia, and his love for the NY METS, NY GIANTS, Notre Dame Football and the Bonnies. Peter was the most kind and generous person anyone ever met and was always willing to take a chance on people. His motto was "It's nice to be nice". He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gloria, at home; a daughter: Tricia of Monticello; a sister: Patricia McLucas & her husband Jack of Hoosick Falls; a sister-in-law: Jane Lake & her husband Rick of Monticello; mother-in-law: Rose Raimond of Monticello; father-in-law: Joseph Angerami of Monticello; Uncle Ralph and Aunt Helen Raimond of White Mills, PA; many cousins, nieces and nephews of the Cahalan, Cleary, Washington family; as well as his extended golf family and Luna, Peter's best nap buddy. He is predeceased by his parents; brother Patrick; his cousin/brother John Washington; and Bo, family beagle of 17 years. Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, February 10 from 5-8pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 11 at 10am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Peter H. Cahalan Scholarship Fund, c/o A.P.
