June C. Motl of Monticello, a retired Physical Education teacher for Monticello Central Schools, died Thursday, October 2, 2014. She was 100.
The daughter of the late Charles Cunningham and Mary Jane Parker Cunningham Wasson, she was born June 25, 1914 in Watkins Glen. She was the widow of Edwin G. Motl who predeceased her on June 27, 1981.
June graduated from Cortland State Teachers College, majoring in Physical Education, and began teaching in the Monticello Central School District in 1936, as the District's first women's Physical Education teacher. She married Edwin G. Motl on June 28, 1939. Later in life, after her children were older, June returned to teaching as a substitute teacher. She received a Universal Subbing License from NY State and taught in all disciplines in Monticello High School for twenty years. An avid reader, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Crawford Library, helping to change the library from a private to a public system.
She is survived by her children: Emil and wife Eileen, Matthew Peter, Mary Jane, J.T. and wife Kathy, and Doris; her grandchildren: Karen Bigelman and husband Kevin, Veronica McElroy and husband Dennis, Phillip Motl, Edwin Motl and wife Amanda; great grandchildren: Anna, Abby and Brady Bigelman, and Louie McElroy; and beloved nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son: Phillip, twin to Mary Jane; and Matthew Peter's wife, Lois Ann.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, October 7, from 4 to 7 pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 8, at 10 am at St. Peter's Church, Broadway and Liberty Street, in Monticello with Fr. Timothy S. Wiggins officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.
