Carl L. Bates, a retired carpenter and heavy equipment operator and lifelong resident of Monticello, passed away February 25, 2013, at his home. He was 89. Son of the late Anson O. Bates and Lulu Hornbeck Bates, he was born October 7, 1923 in Monticello, NY. Carl was admired by many for his carpentry skills and his precision in excavating and earth moving. He proudly served in the "Seabees" Construction Battalion of the Navy in World War II during the invasion of Guam and the building of it's infrastructure after the defeat of the Japanese. He was very active in the Bailey-Richman VFW Post 9588. He served in many positions over the years, most notably Post Commander and District #2 Commander. He was also a charter member of the Rock Hill Volunteer Fire Department and served his community in that capacity for many years. A true "Country Boy", born and raised in Bridgeville, NY who loved to fish, hunt and spend a good part of his life in the outdoors. He was a charter member and one of the carpenters who helped build the popular Cliff Lodge Hunting Club of South Woods, NY. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine at home; his son, Jim Bates; grandson, Christopher Bates and his wife, Heather; his great-grandson, Jaxon Owen Bates, all of Monticello; and his sister, Doris and her husband, Jim of Phoenix, AZ. Interment of Carl's ashes will take place in the Spring at the Sullivan County Veteran's Cemetery, in Liberty, NY.
