John C. Horton, a local architect and lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 58. The son of Clifford Horton and the late Marjorie Sloat Horton, he was born June 10, 1955 in Monticello. John graduated from Monticello High School, Orange County Community College, where he met his wife Susan, and University at Buffalo, where he received his degree in Architecture. In 1985 John opened his Architectural Practice in Wurtsboro. John was an honorary member of the Wurtsboro Fire Department, past member of the Catskill Regional Hospital Board of Directors, Past President of the Wurtsboro Board of Trade and a member of the Cherokee Preserve Club. John's passion was restoring classic cars. He was very proud of his 1957 Chevy Truck and was in process of restoring a 1963 Thunderbird, known as "Sue's Car". John was affectionately known as "Papa John" by his four grandchildren who he adored. He is survived by his wife: Susan Horton, at home; a daughter: Jaclyn C. Horton and her spouse Bradley Jennex of Wurtsboro; a son: Eric J. Horton and his wife Nikki of Wurtsboro; four grandchildren: Lucas and Natalie Jennex, and Sophia and Alexandra Horton; his father: Clifford Horton of Bethel; two brothers: Robert Horton & his wife June of Colchester, VT and Glenn Horton and Sharon Zimmerman of Grahamsville; a sister: Betty Lindsay of Bethel; his in-laws: Patricia and Samuel Constantino of Wurtsboro; and several other in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, March 14 from 2-4 and 6-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 11am at the Community Church of Wurtsboro, 134 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Rev. Robert Meyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550 or SUNY Orange Foundation, 115 South St., Middletown 10940, where a scholarship to honor John will be established.
