Arnold Alonso of Parksville, a retired driver and manager for Melkon Candy Co. in Queens, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at the Achieve Rehab & Nursing Facility in Liberty. He was 77. The son of the late Joaquin Alonso and Elisa Quilez-Beltran, he was born July 8, 1934 in Havana, Cuba. A veteran of the United States Army, Arnold was also a freelance artist and calligrapher, as well as a craftsman and carpenter. He is survived by his companion: Martha Johnson and her family of Monticello; two daughters: Elisa Alonso-Rios and Ellinis Alonso, both of Pennsylvania; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister: Aneida Amaral. Family & friends are invited to gather on Friday, December 23 from 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Burial will be held at a later date at the Woodlawn Park North Cemetery in Miami, Florida. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one's choice.
