Obituary of John I. Loughlin

John Irving Loughlin, formerly of Medina, New York, and of Rock Hill, New York, died peacefully at home Thursday, March 31, 2011. He was born in Herkimer, New York in 1925, the son of Mary T. and Irving Loughlin. He enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17 and served in the Pacific during World War II as quartermaster and navigator aboard the USS C. S. Badger, a destroyer. He returned from the Navy and completed high school where he began a life long passion for coaching high school sports.
He graduated from Brockport State Teachers College in 1952 and began teaching health and physical education at Monroe High School in Rochester, New York. In 1955 he moved to Medina, New York where he began a 26-year career with the Medina Central School district. He served in a variety of capacities including teaching assignments, as athletic director, as an assistant principal and director of transportation. He coached track and baseball, but his great love was football where as head coach he compiled a record of 135 wins 50 losses and 7 ties over 24 seasons. He took great satisfaction from the Mustangs being league champions 13 times during his career. He also refereed high school and college basketball for almost three decades. During his residency in Medina, he served his community in a variety of capacities including as a Village Trustee, a member of the Board of Education and one of the founding members of the Armory Committee for the YMCA.
In 1992 he moved with his wife, Joanna N. Loughlin to Rock Hill, New York to be closer to their children residing in metropolitan New York City. In Rock Hill, he served on the Board of Directors of Emerald Green Homeowners Association and the Finance Committee of St. Joseph's Parish of Wurtsboro. He was also a life long member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and more recently the Holy Name Society of St. Josephs Parish.
John is survived by Joanna, his wife of 57 years, three children, John (and Darlene) of Rye, New York, James of Manhattan, and Joseph (and Suzanne) of Rock Hill, NY, as well as four grandchildren. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, April 5th, at 10 AM, St. Joseph's Parish, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro, NY with Fr. Peter Madori officiating.
