Lydia Karas of Wurtsboro, a retired nursing assistant and longtime resident of the area, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the Achieve Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility in Liberty. She was 85. The daughter of the late Alexander and Anastasia Wysoczyn, she was born February 12, 1925 in the Ukraine. Lydia was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wurtsboro. She and her husband, Stanley met while both prisoners of war in Germany under Hitler in World War II. They both survived the tortuous forced labor in the mines, married soon thereafter and moved to the United States in 1955 to raise a family. Stanley died on February 4, 2006. She is survived by three daughters: Lucy Notarbartolo & her husband Arthur of Otisville, Irene Karas of Brooklyn and Helen Cabales of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren: Arthur, Danielle and Anthony; two great grandchildren: Marissa and Michael; a sister: Olga of the Ukraine; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 13 from 2-5pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 14 at 11:00am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro. Arrangements under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.
