Barbara Piper, of Wurtsboro, a Trustee of the Village of Wurtsboro and retired office clerk for A. & J. Hometown Oil, died Thursday, November 25, 2010 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill Campus, in Goshen. She was 73. The daughter of the late Walter Lowerre and Olive Cordier Lowerre, she was born November 18, 1937 in Fair Oaks and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was active in many village and civic affairs and was serving her second term as village Trustee. She was a member of the Wurtsboro Renaissance, the Town of Mamakating Republican Club, and the Sylvan Cemetery Association. She took great pride in keeping the village looking its best, spending many hours beautifying the Veterans' Park, the Michael Diamond Square and the flower boxes lining Sullivan Street, as well as her own lovely gardens. She was one of the organizers of the annual Duck Race, raising funds for various Renaissance projects. In 2004 she was honored to be the recipient of the annual Michael Diamond Memorial Foundation Community Service award. A family statement read: "Mom loved to take care of others; whether it was her family, her friends or the community at large, she was happiest when she was doing something for someone else, or when she was tending to her gardens. We love you and we'll miss you so much, Mom." Barbara is survived by her children, Vivian Piper, of Port Ewen; June Piper Horton and her husband, Bob, of Colchester, VT; Patrick Piper and his wife, Kathy, of Greenfield Center, and Andrew Piper, of Myrtle Point, OR; her beloved grandchildren, Timothy and Amy Horton; her companion, Cliff Horton, of Bethel; her step-mother, Doris Lowerre, of Fair Oaks; a sister, Patricia Lambach, of Brooksville, FL; a brother, Richard Lowerre and his wife, Carrie, of Middletown; three nieces, Nancy Esses, Anne Gutierrez and Lori Crescenzo; the father of her children, Gordon Piper, of Wurtsboro; and her "third daughter," Margaret C. Moran, of Port Ewen. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by a brief gathering at Veterans' Park, Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wurtsboro Renaissance, 69 Forest Drive, Wurtsboro, NY 12790, or plant a tree, nurture a flower, hug a loved one.
