Obituary of Donald J. Shiells

Donald Shiells was born in Sussex, NJ on February 22, 1937, the son of the late Walter Shiells and Jenny Jordan Shiells.  He was a lifelong resident of Forestburgh and graduated from Monticello High School in 1958.  Later he became a member of the National Guard and was hired by the Forestburgh Highway Department until his retirement.  Donald was an avid HO model train enthusiast and constructed many layouts as a hobby.  Donald, most people would agree, was a very kind and gentle person.  He also was very generous and supported many charities.

He died peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025 under hospice care in Bel Air, Maryland.  Donald is survived by his brother and best friend, James Shiells of Edgewood, MD.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 15 from 11:00am to 1:30pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.  His funeral mass will then be celebrated at 2:00pm at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello with Fr. Bob Porpora officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery in Forestburgh.
