Obituary of Andrew F. Cannella

Andrew F. Cannella of Rock Hill, a retired union laborer, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown.  He was 87.

 

The son of the late Paul Cannella and Sara Simon Cannella, he was born April 2, 1937 in Manhattan.

 

Andy joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 19 and went on to receive several recognitions over the years.  Most recently in 2001, he spearheaded the project to put a Veterans Memorial in Rock Hill which still stands today. He was also a member of the Rock Hill Business and Community Association; a former manager and coach for the Rock Hill Fire Dept. 1976 Fire Dept League Champs; and was President of the Beaver Lake Homeowner’s Association for 47 years.

 

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Marie E. Vazquez Cannella, at home; a daughter: Denise R. Ellmauer and her husband Lee of Youngsville; a grandson: Lee C. Ellmauer III; a brother-in-law: Robert Vazquez and his wife Monica; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings: Audrey, Roberta and Morris; and a grandson: Andrew Lee Ellmauer.

 

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 22 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.  His funeral service will be held on Friday, August 23 at 10am at the funeral home.  Burial with military honors will follow at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.

 

Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Tunnels to Towers, or a local veterans charity of one’s choice.
