My first recollections of Lillian and her sister Ella were them getting on our school bus. They were juniors and seniors and I was in grade school so they were one of the “ big kids”. My brother Henry and I walked from our house on Rose Valley Road out to our school bus stop at the intersection of S. Woods Dr. and Rose Valley Road. Lillian and Ella walked from there Messenger farmhouse to the intersection of Price Road on S. Woods Dr. and their bus stop. My mom used to stop at the Messenger chicken farm of Edith and Claude to buy eggs and once in a while Lillian or Ella would also be around. Over the years, I saw them continuously as neighbors and friends. We crossed paths on the ambulance corp and also they came around to collect money for needy families from the families in South Woods. Lillian and Sunny became clients and continued to work hard and put away money for their retirement.
I didn’t realize during those early years on the school bus that Lillian had gone to the One-Room schoolhouse in South Woods in her grade school years. When my brother and I did the Town of Thompson one One-Room Schoolhouse Project seven years ago I interviewed Lillian and also Ella to hear what their experiences were going to a One-Room school. When we put up the historic plaque, both of them came to the unveiling ceremony. Anytime I had contact with Lillian and it was always great talk about relatives and friends in the Southwood and all of the families who had been there so long.
My condolences to all of the Messenger and Ernest families.
Regards, Gordon MacAdam

Mom, Momma, Grammy…. My heart just aches and the tears keep falling, you are missed so deeply. I want to thank you for such wonderful memories. You helped me plant my first flower bed and shared your love a flowers with me. Taught me how to sew and crochet… both of us lefties! Your love of taking pictures was known and appreciated by all. You started collecting thimbles and next thing you know whenever we traveled we brought you back one to add to your collection! And you loved cardinals…. So whenever we see one we think of you. Mom, you and I shared so many shopping trips together as there always seemed to be someone’s birthday coming up, and you loved to stop at the custard stand on the way home afterwards! Your love of fun had you hopping on the toboggans with the kids and sliding down the hill with them! You were always smiling and you will be loved by us forever. And books….tons and tons of books… we all love them and would read and pass them on. So many memories Mom… you are deeply missed, we were blessed to have you and Dad for parents…thank you for all the love, encouragement and support you always gave us. Give Dad a hug and kiss from us all. I love you. Janie

Mom, words do not come easily because of the love and emotions that fill me up when I think of you. Thank you for all that you have done for me and my family...thank you for helping me learn to can up the veggies with Aunt Ella and Grandma...the three of you made work into a fun learning experience. Dad, you and Aunt Ella along with me were the ambulance crew a lot of nights; who would know that would grow into a desire to become a nurse. I remember you teaching us how to sew clothes for our Barbie dolls and then how to sew clothes for my daughter. Your enjoyment of taking photos was passed along to each of us...talk about hundreds of photos we each accumulated. Your legacy of enjoying flowers, taking photos, teasing and enjoying the moments so events were fun and safe abound. Tom and I, our children and grandchildren all miss you, for you were blessed by a loving family. Rest now with our Heavenly Father and give dad a hug and kiss from us. We love you.

Grammy,
You were the best grandmother I ever had. Your smile and laugh were always contagious. You always were a trickster and liked teasing and playing with your kids and grandkids. Even when you were sick in the hospital, you teased me and just had a ball doing it. Your love for flowers and cardinals will forever be carried on with your family. I’m glad you can finally be with Poppy again. I love you so much Gram. Until we meet again.
-Your granddaughter Jess

Cousin Lil…you will be dearly missed. You were a very precious, thoughtful and giving lady.
I remember babysitting many Saturday nights for the kids while you and Sonny square danced the night away!
I am sure you are rejoicing in heaven with your Mom, Dad…my Mom and Dad and your family. You will be greatly missed by all who knew you.
My love and sympathy to your children and family members.
Love you all,
Jane

Aunt Lil always had her camera! She would take photos at the gatherings she was at and then I would find a copy of the pictures dropped off at my house after she had them developed. Always with a smile, may she rest in peace.
