Obituary of Richard Ellis

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Richard Ellis, Sr., fondly known as “Butch,” was born on July 10, 1942 in Monticello, NY, to the late James Ellis, Sr. and Caroline Walker Ellis.  On Thursday, January 25, 2024, Richard departed this life for a new resting place.

Richard attended the Monticello Central Schools and graduated from Monticello High School.  Prior to his retirement from Construction, he was employed as a Sanitation Worker and Police Officer.

Richard affectionately received the loving moniker “Butch,” as a child and it stuck with him throughout his life.

Richard was a very clean and neat individual.  He loved getting dressed on Sundays and would always top the outfit off with a pair of shades.  In his younger years, he enjoyed riding his Kawasaki 1000 and neighborhood children would watch him ride with sheer fascination.  He will be remembered for his love for golf, which he enjoyed with his friends and brothers, as well as horse races, especially at the Monticello Raceway.  Butch will also be remembered for the love and laughter he spread at family gatherings.

Richard was predeceased by his parents; his wife; Daisy L. Johnson Ellis;  one sister, Jearlene I. Cleveland; and two brothers, James Ellis, Jr. and George Ellis.  Left to cherish his memories are his long-time companion, Freida Luster and her children, Tonya McGregor and Ben Luster; one sister, Armelda Bracey (Samuel) of Monticello, NY; a sister-in-law, Terry Ellis of Wappingers Falls, NY; sons, Gregory Johnson (Yvette) of Morristown, NJ, Richard “Moon” Ellis, Jr. (Youlanda) of West Palm Beach, FL, Darren Ellis (Monique Robles) of Monticello, NY and Chad Washington (Iesha Ross) of Monticello, NY.  He is also survived by numerous grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sleep on Butch, take your well-deserved rest.  We all loved you dearly, but God loved you best.
