Obituary of John L. Masten, Sr.

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John Masten Senior, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, passed away at home peacefully at the age of 90 years old on February 11, 2022.

John was a well-known fireman and barber for the town of Wurtsboro for many years and worked in the Woodbourne prison as a barber.  He was a woodworker, a musician, a graduate of SUNY New Paltz, and a creator of beautiful artistic items.  He obtained his associate degree at SUNY New Paltz to work as a teacher.  He had a passion for technology and was a recognized historian and was the co-founder of the Mamakating Historical Society along with his wife Bernice Masten.  Out of all of his roles and hobbies in life, the most important perhaps; was that of father, husband, and grandfather.  He was deeply loved by his family and the community.  You would often find him behind a computer, guitar, or at the historical society earlier in life.  If he was not doing these activities, he was with his family laughing and appreciating the small moments.

John joins his late wife Bernice Decker Masten, daughter Barbara Masten Jahrling, sister Mary Masten Kayne, and brothers Ray and Joseph Masten.  He is survived by his son John Masten Jr. and daughter-in-law Laurie Masten; and his grandchildren Annalise Masten-Muniz and John Masten III, and their spouses Justice Muniz-Dingevan and Melissa Masten.  The remaining family members include Brian Jahrling, Bobby Jahrling, Bob Jahrling, and great-granddaughter Alexis Jahrling.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 16 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with a prayer service starting at approx. 6:00pm.  Interment of his ashes will be held at a later date at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
