Obituary of John E. Oney

John E. Oney transitioned to his eternal life on Monday, December 6, 2021. John was born April 21, 1942 in Laurel, Delaware to the late John Oney and Retta West.  He attended William C Jason High School before working on a farm.

He later moved to Oxon Hill Maryland to start his career as a Jockey at Rosecroft Raceway. John traveled all through upstate New York and New Jersey racing at several racetracks.  John retired in 2019 as a Horse Grooman at the Monticello Raceway, in Monticello New York. John later settled in Mongaup Valley, New York with his wife Joyce Dorsey-Oney

Besides his love of horses; John loved watching wrestling, playing lottery numbers, collecting sports cards, coins, other memorabilia and spending time with his best friend Richard “Rich” Rosenthal.

John will always be remembered for willing to help others, his kindness, strength, sense of humor, loving ways and dedication to his children, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce Dorsey-Oney; his children: Quenessa, Carlton (Michelle Oney), Delcina (James McNeely), Mervin, Eric, Jonathan, Duwayne, and Baby Ray who is like a son; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; his siblings: Sylvester (Jane Oney), David (Diane Oney), Doris (deceased Frank Winder), Hilda Page, Marie (deceased Robert Stanley); his second family: Mary Talora (Ervin), Shirley Newman (Eric), Gregory Dorsey (Sylvia), Delphus Jr. Dorsey (deceased), Owen Dorsey, Karen Dorsey, and deceased James Dorsey (Helen); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John Oney and Retta West, mother in law Ora Dorsey and father in law Delphus Dorsey.
