Obituary of Provie E. Smith

Please share a memory of Provie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Provie Eugenia Smith of Swan Lake passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was 37.

The daughter of William Smith and Maria Pineda Smith, she was born July 12, 1984 in Queens.

Provie was a very smart little girl.  She learned to read when she was four years old.  What she loved to do more than anything was to sit quietly to read her favorite mystery and adventure books.  She was a very creative person. She loved to draw and write short stories about nature and the power of love. Her artistic talent was unmatched. She was very mature for her age.  She was extremely sensitive and aware of other's needs.  She always knew what to say to someone who needed kind words. She was extremely generous with her money and time.

She attended Sullivan West School District in Sullivan County and her academic record was excellent.  She graduated from high school and went to Hunter College in New York City where she graduated with a four-year degree.  Right after that, she pursued her law degree at Brooklyn Law School where she graduated in June 2009.  She practiced family law in Monticello for five years after volunteering in Louisiana for almost a year.  She was always willing to help any person whether they had money to pay for her services or not. She always put the needs of others before her own. The last years of her life she worked from home as an attorney since her health started to deteriorate little by little.

She had a strong spirit and never gave up whenever she faced any challenge whether in her personal or professional life.  She lived life passionately, not half-heartedly. In some ways, you can say that in her thirty-seven years of her short life, she lived more than most people. Provie never met a stranger because she made friends easily. She would do anything for her friends and family. Provie was self-less. Her being was filled with love and kindness. She had an infectious laugh and smile that would bring joy to everyone around her. She was a bright light in the lives of many and her strength was an inspiration. She had the biggest heart. Her bright light exists in all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will live in our hearts forever.

Provie is survived by her parents, William and Maria Smith of Swan Lake, NY; and a brother Sam W. Smith of New Paltz, NY.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 4 from 9:00 to 11:00am at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.  Her funeral service will be held at 11am at the funeral home and burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.
