Obituary of Clifford D. Jessup
Clifford DeWitt Jessup of Wurtsboro passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on August 26, 2021 in Palm Coast, FL. He was 74.
The son of the late DeWitt “Buster” Jessup and Vera (Linzey) Jessup, he was born February 4, 1947 in Goshen, NY.
Cliff grew up in Monroe, NY and proudly graduated from Monroe Woodbury High School in 1965. He entered the United States Navy in 1967, fighting in the Vietnam War until 1969. In 1975 he met Lucy (Zoutman), fell in love and they were married on March 12, 1977. In 1985, Cliff and Lucy moved from Monroe to Wurtsboro, NY to raise their family in the small, quaint community. Cliff began working at Wurtsboro Oil and then later co-owned A & J Hometown Oil. He fell in love with the Wurtsboro community and served as Trustee and later Mayor of the Village. After retiring from the heating oil industry, he worked for Monticello Central School District as a teacher aide as a way to keep busy while Lucy continued to work. He absolutely loved working with the students and once stated "I missed my calling." In 2013, Lucy retired, and they moved to Palm Coast, Florida.
Growing up in Monroe, one would always find Cliff bowling at the Monroe Bowling Alley. Summers and weekends were spent camping or fishing on the Esopus Creek on the family property. Cliff knew how to enjoy life and was always up for a game of golf, fishing trip, talking politics, or traveling (especially to his and Lucy's favorite location, Disney World).
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Lucy; their two daughters: Jennifer Jessup Ruston (Will), and Cynthia Jessup Schweers (Terry); three grandchildren: Noah & Logan Schweers, and Linzey Ruston; in-laws: Johanna Didato, Steve & Ann Zoutman and Diana Zoutman; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers-in-law: Butch Zoutman and Sal Didato.
