Obituary of Claire T. Cirone

Claire T. Cirone of Wurtsboro, a retired Principal for the Academy Avenue School in Middletown, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021 surrounded by family at the Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown.  She was 99.

The daughter of the late Enoch A. Parsons and Elizabeth R. Kiernan Parsons, she was born October 21, 1921 in Manhattan. She was the widow of Cono N. “Cooney” Cirone who predeceased her on October 15, 1991.

One of her prized achievements was teaching other teachers "THE NEW MATH" of the day. Her time at Academy Avenue was her third love. Claire was also a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wurtsboro. To the extended family, please find solace in her smile. An 8-year-old Claire proclaimed, "WE'RE HOME" upon seeing Wurtsboro Hills (third hill) for the first time. The 99 year old Claire is echoing, "I'M HOME".

She is survived by her son: Joseph Cono Cirone & his wife Marlene of Wurtsboro; three grandchildren: Nicole Mongin (Timothy), Cassandra Babcock (Joseph) and Cono J.E. Cirone (Renee); five great grandchildren: Adam, Molly, Alexander, Isabella Claire and Benjamin; and many nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband Cooney, she was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Rose; a sister, Rhoda Nacrelli; and a brother, Frank Parsons.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 2 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.  Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 3 at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with her good friend, Fr. Peter Madori, officiating.  Burial will follow at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
