Obituary of Levon Snowden Sr.

Please share a memory of Levon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Levon “Bo” Snowden, Sr. gained his wings and went to be with our heavenly Father on August 16, 2021.  He was 90 years old.

He was born on February 24, 1931 to the late Rayfield and Leeida Johnson Snowden in Bay Minette, AL.  He was the 10th child of 19 children.

Levon was educated in the public schools in Bay Minette, AL and was a member of the St. Mary Baptist Church in Hurricane, AL.   He was married to the late Mary Frances Hooks Snowden and this union was blessed with 7 children.  While at home, Levon worked at the International Paperwood, Inc.  He relocated to Sullivan County in 1962.  He was a hard worker and became the Foreman at United Beverage, Inc. in Kiamesha Lake, NY.   After working there for over 45 plus years, the company was sold, and he retired.  He was always so busy working that staying home became boring and he decided to go back to work.  He worked for Reynolds Ice Dist. in Kiamesha Lake, NY for a few years, loved helping the Men’s Auxiliary at First Baptist Church for their annual Easter breakfasts, and he volunteered and assisted with various organizations in the area with distribution of food for the needy.  He also served as Coach for the Summer Basketball team in the Liberty League for many years, which was sponsored by United Beverage.

Bo was well-known throughout Sullivan County.  He loved to help people.  It did not matter who you were, he would help if he could.  He will be remembered for having a name for everyone, and that name was George.

Levon was known to most as Pop, Bo, Bopeep and Bobo.  Bo loved his family and attended and supported all of their football, basketball and soccer games.  He would leave his job to go watch his children play sports.  He gave all of them nicknames, such as Shelly, Pony, Tala, Monkey, Johnny, Mop, Homeboy, Cuda, Babe, Peewee, Keno, Fish, Big Red, Jo Baby, Jay Bird, Big Mama, and many more.

He loved to go fishing and hunting.  Cooking was his greatest joy.  All the children, cousins, etc., would come over every holiday for the wild game.  He looked out for his family in every way possible.  In the winter months, he would go to his children’s homes and plow the snow before he went to his daily occupation.  He would also do this for his sister, the late Melissa Agee.  When it came time for barbeques, he was the first one to arrive, and the last to leave.  Bo’s barbeque was the best.

Bo will also be remembered for being a man of his word.

Levon “Bo” Snowden, Sr. is lovingly remembered by his three sons, Levon (Ella) Snowden, of Monticello, NY, John Snowden of Brooksville, FL, and Robert (Juanita) Snowden of Raleigh, NC; two daughters, Mary Hopkins of Monticello, NY and Mamie (Kenneth) Ward of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Ida Lee Barnes of Bromley, AL and Louise Massey of Rochester, NY; two daughters-in-law, JoAnn Snowden and Shirley Snowden of Monticello, NY; 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Levon was predeceased by his wife, Mary Hooks Snowden; two sons, Mack and Michael Snowden, 8 brothers and 8 sisters.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 21 at 12:00 noon at the Bethlehem Temple Church, 93 Fairground Road in Monticello with Pastor Ryan Tinsley officiating.  Viewing will be from 10am to 12pm at the church.  Burial will follow at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
