Obituary of Denis A. Holohan Sr.
Denis Anthony Holohan Sr. of Wurtsboro passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh. He was 84.
The son of the late George T. Holohan and Anna Ezykowich Holohan, he was born February 21, 1937 in Brooklyn.
Starting his military career in the National Guard, he then served 20 plus years with the Coast Guard Reserves retiring with 30 years of service and several honors. Denis was a Master Electrician and employed full time by New York State as Plant Maintenance Supervisor/Superintendent at SUNY Stony Brook, Bedford Hills Correctional Facility and retired from Mid-Orange Correctional Facility. On the side, he continued the family business his father started, Holohan & Sons General Contracting. Denis enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with his wife and family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years: Ellen Clarke Holohan, at home; their children: Denise Boden of Riverhead, Sharon Lamendola (Thomas) of Wurtsboro, Denis Holohan Jr. (Vicki) of Wurtsboro, John Holohan (Bozena) of Wake Forest, NC and Maryann Swensen (Craig) of Wurtsboro; grandchildren: Melissa, Eric, Amy, Bryan, Jessica, Thomas Jr., Christina, Katrina, Joan Ellen, Denis III, Stephanie, Kyle, Tiffany, Christopher, Connor, Courtney, Cassidy and Kellie; thirteen great grandchildren; a brother: James Holihan (Connie) of New Port Richie, FL; a sister: June Anderson of Cottonwood, AZ; a sister-in-law: Catherine Quinlan; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, George; a son-in-law, Robert Boden; and a brother-in-law, John Quinlan.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 4 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 5 at 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 180 Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
