Obituary of Andre Parks
André Parks, 73, of Westbrookville, died peacefully and in comfort on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh.
He was born September 25, 1947 in the Washington, DC area to William Parks and Fernando Maria Claus Parks. He loved to tell the story of how his parents met. His mother was from Strasbourg, France and they met while his father (a LT) was serving on Eisenhower’s staff in World War II.
André had spent the last twenty years of his life at his dearly loved home in the Town of Mamakating, Wurtsboro. A lover of history and all things past, he was very proud of his home built around 1834. He also loved auctions and antique shops, filling the home with beautiful things. He and his wife travelled extensively to Africa, China, Tibet and most of Europe. They bred and showed English Bulldogs creating 7 champion dogs for their kennel Scion Bulldogs.
He was very proud of service in the US Army, on active duty, in reserves and the New York Guard. As a member of the 82nd Airborne, he was given an award by the government of Thailand for teaching jump school to Thai soldiers during the Vietnam War, and learned to love Thai food (the hotter the better). In 2012, he retired from New York Guard with rank of Major. His most prized possession was his beloved John Deere tractor and loved to Zen out, mowing his lawn, and any lawn.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joan, and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and a sister, Ina Parks Wolfe & her husband Jeff. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his infant brother, Daniel. Also of great importance to him were his faithful companions, Rufus and Princess.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 13 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Due to the current health crisis, social distancing guidelines must be met. A limited number of people at one time will be allowed in the funeral home and face masks are required.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Port Jervis Humane Shelter or to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh.
Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro. For additional information or to send an online condolence, please visit www.kennyfuneralhome.com
