Obituary of Diana Avery Lessel

Diana Avery Lessel, a retired special education teacher for North Shore Schools in Glen Head, passed away on Monday, March 22, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.  She was 83.

 

The daughter of the late Roger E. Avery and Barbara Milliken Avery, she was born January 1, 1938 in Laconia, NH. She later moved to Oyster Bay and Glen Cove Long Island,

 

She spent her life as a teacher, but was a dedicated volunteer for local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and the Lions Club which brought her much joy in life.  Above all, she loved her time with her grandchildren as their MiMi and would want to be remembered with a smile.

 

She is survived by her loving partner, David M. Gordon; Son, Steven Gordon, Daughters, Michelle Minor, and Kimberly McDermott & her husband Todd; grandchildren, Katy Quick and husband Alex, Becky Minor, Cody Minor, Griffin McDermott and wife Christine, Gavin McDermott and Grace McDermott; great grandson, Owen Palmer.  Her sister-in-law Val Avery and predeceased by her beloved brother Thomas Avery.

Following cremation, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Middletown Humane Society, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
