Obituary of Stephen Buchman

On Sunday, February 7, 2021, Stephen Buchman of Rock Hill passed away at the age of 89. After facing numerous serious physical and medical issues for much of his adult life, a courageous battle with cancer finally took him.

Born in South Fallsburg, NY to Frank and Stella Buchman, Stephen was a devoted husband to his wife of 64 years, Phyllis, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was truly loved by his family and will be missed. His strength and determination was an inspiration to so many throughout his years on earth. 

He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was wounded in combat in Korea, returning home blind. Despite his pain, he was a hero until the end. He was a 54-year Auxiliary member of the Rock Hill Fire Department, a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association and a member of the Blind Veterans Association. 

He is survived by his daughter: Carol Buchman, granddaughter: Melinda (Kris) Gwiozdowski, great-granddaughter: Ava and several nieces & nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife: Phyllis, a son: Craig, a daughter: Susan, a daughter-in-law: Kelly, and four brothers: Paul, Andrew, Harry and William.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 13 from 12:00 to 2:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Due to the current health crisis, social distancing guidelines must be met - a limited number of people at one time will be allowed in the funeral home, and facemasks are required. Burial with military honors will follow at the Hurleyville Cemetery.
