Obituary of Donald J. Botbyl

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Donald J. Botbyl Jr., age 66, passed away suddenly on December 15th, 2020.

Predeceased by his father Donald J. Botbyl Sr., he leaves behind his loving mother Florence Botbyl, his Kool sister Kathy D’Amelio, nephews Patrick and Connor, many cousins and friends, and his proudest accomplishments: son Casey Botbyl (Elya), daughter Paige Botbyl, and grandson Brody Botbyl.

Don’s love of his family was his predominant characteristic. He would help anyone with anything at any time. As a jack of all trades, he was often called upon by his cousins and friends for help and advice. Guaranteed, if someone needed something, he had one in his garage (or 4 because he kept losing it and rebuying).

Best known for his fashion sense, Don could often be seen sporting a scroungy goatee and wearing a ripped and stained Port Authority shirt, long after his retirement in 2011, paired with a sweaty misshapen baseball cap. Meanwhile, his closet was full of new clothes his kids bought for him but weren’t to his liking. His favorite things were the annual trips to The 1000 Islands, The Adirondacks and Dover, watching B-rated science fiction movies, hanging out around the bonfire, playing poker in The Barn during hunting season, having breakfast at Debby’s, and being PopPop to Brody.

Don lit up the world literally. A long-time electrician and polytechnic, his yearly Fourth of July firework shows drew hundreds from near and far. The world is a darker place without him, and he will be missed dearly.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to a firework fund to support a show put on in honor of Don’s life and legacy.
