I am very sorry to hear of Dr. Freer’s passing. I was a student in her Ornithology and Field Biology courses at S.C.C.C. From 1990-1992. She was a wonderful teacher and instilled in me a lifelong interest in birding. I still recall many of the bird calls we studied in her class to this day. My condolences to her family. - Tara Becker

Our family is saddened to learn of Valerie's passing. We had good times as she explained the ins-and-outs of banding owls. And we marveled at how calm and trusting the birds were in her hands.
Singing with Valerie in the church choir was always a joy. If you were going to speak up about a piece of music, you'd better know what you were talking about!
Valerie inquired after our children and their accomplishments.
Her home was always open to me, and she was a welcoming and unassuming host. I always felt welcome there. She and Mary made everyone comfortable without a lot of fuss.
One time I asked Valerie if she would lead a Bible Study class on the birds of the Bible. She laughed and declined, saying that she didn't have the time to devote to the study that would require. But she suggested that maybe I would lead such a class. So we both had a good laugh.
Nan and I will miss Valerie deeply. But we are also glad that the pain and inconveniences of sickness are now past. Valerie was a grand lady, a pillar of the church without even knowing it, I'm sure. We must say "see you later" to a good friend, an accomplished teacher, and a quiet soul who enjoyed her time to the end.
Condolences also from us and our children, Kristen and Kevin.
May God provide a quietness of spirit in the sure knowledge of Valerie's salvation in her Savior. To know Valerie was to enjoy her company, he quiet sense of humor, and her interest in many things.
Rest well, Valerie, in the joy of the Lord. All is well. Thanks be to God.

I’m sorry to hear of Valerie’s passing. She helped me learn how to band birds and was a very patient and incredibly knowledgeable teacher. She had a wonderful passion for learning and teaching that will live on in the people lucky enough to have known her. I will always think of her when I see a female. Black throated Blue warbler, the one that stumped me when we netted one at her house. They look very different in the hand than flying free...there’s probably a metaphor there to ponder.

Valerie was my 7th grade biology teacher and the reason I majored in biology and secondary education and made it my career for 32 years. She also influenced greatly my interest in birding, taking me on several of her bird banding excursions as a teenager.
I am so sorry learn of her passing.

She must have been in her late 20's when I was in one of her classes at the Ellenville School in mid-1960's. She was a wonderful teacher, seemed to genuinely care about her students and to love her chosen work. As I recall, she would take interested students on early morning birding outings.
