Obituary of Mary E. Michaels

Mary E. Michaels, a longtime resident of Wurtsboro and formerly of Staten Island, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the ORMC-Horton Campus in Middletown. She was 72 years old.
The daughter of the late Hugh B. Smith and Mary Byrne Smith, she was born September 26, 1935 in Manhattan.
Our Mary (Mom) was the strongest person any of us ever knew. She fought a great fight until the very end. She loved and adored her family, and life in general. She was always there for anyone who needed her help. She was kind, caring and generous. She always thought of others before herself and never complained about the difficulties that life handed her. Her smile could make the biggest problems seem smaller. We all looked to her for guidance in tough times for her kindness, warmth, love and sense of humor. She will be loved forever, sadly missed and always in our hearts. The world is a poorer place without her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 40 years: Andrew Michaels, at home; her four children: Michael Nolan & his wife Bette of Staten Island, Robert Nolan of Brooklyn, Christine Ricker & her husband Kevin of Wurtsboro, and Andrew Michaels & his wife Christine of Staten Island; her six grandchildren: Sean Nolan, MaryGrace Nolan, Athena Ricker, Kevin Ricker, Sofia Michaels and Colleen Michaels; a sister: Charlotte Fitzsimmons of Brewster; and several nieces & nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother: Huey Smith.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 29 from 3:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 30 at 10:00am at the St. Josephs Church, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Burial will follow in the Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery in Bloomingburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 419 East Main Street, Suite 307B, Middletown, NY 10940, and would be appreciated.
