Miresmi Karida Lumo entered into her heavenly rest on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 85. The eldest daughter of the late Jesse Connor and Georgianna Ross Currence, she was born on July 5, 1922 on her fathers birthday in York County, South Carolina. She attended the York County public schools and Sullivan County Community College, and also the Beauty Culture School in Charlotte, NC. She enjoyed her craft by making dolls, quilts, sewing and cooking. Miresmi met and married Clarence Westbrook, Jr. while working at a defense plant during World War II. She retired from Rose Valley Senior Center and was called Grandma by many who knew her. Her children loved her for her stern attitude, good cooking and solid advice. Survivors include a daughter: Linda Gomez of Monticello; two sons: James Melvin Currence of Winston Salem, NC and Askalu Benari (aka Clarence Westbrook) of Monticello; four granddaughters: Annette, Mitzi, Shareen and Nicole; one grandson: Varako (aka Earl Gomez); three great grandchildren: Jamel, Malik & Charnelle. She is also survived by two sisters: Grace Jackson & her husband of Charlotte, NC, Tshara Lu Fasi DDas; one brother-in-law: Depta K. DDas of Brooklyn and one brother: DeQuincy Currence of Winston Salem, NC; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her late husband: Clarence Westbrook Jr.; her parents: Jesse Connor and Georgianna Ross Currence; one son: Lionel Westbrook; one daughter: Barbara Ann Westbrook; one sister: Klenladi Zinn; and one brother: William Connor (Bill) Currence. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 9 at 10:00am at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
