Obituary of Andrew Pekal

Andrew Pekal of Wurtsboro died Sunday, April 22, 2007 after a five-month battle with cancer. He was 10 and a half years old. The son of Marian Pekal and Boguslawa Janas Pekal, he was born October 20, 1996 in Westchester County, NY. A fifth-grade student in Mrs. Marilyn Lounsburys class at the Emma C. Chase Elementary School in Wurtsboro, Andrew was to be awarded the Presidents Award for Educational Excellence this year. According to his Principal, Mrs. Susan Gottlieb, he was in the Monticello Enrichment Program, band, chorus and even started to play the piano. He was artistic, a great soccer player, and was also involved in baseball, Karate and Taekwondo. He is survived by his parents: Marian & Boguslawa Pekal, and his sister: Amy Pekal, all at home in Wurtsboro; his paternal grandmother: Zdzislawa Pekal of Brooklyn; his maternal grandparents: Maria & Kazimierz Janas of Poland; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family, both in the United States and Poland. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 26 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 27 at 10:00am at St. Josephs Church, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Fr. Peter Madori will officiate.
