Obituary of Viola Carol Schoonmaker
Please share a memory of Viola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Viola Carol Schoonmaker of Wurtsboro, a homemaker and longtime resident of the area passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Middletown Park Manor Rehabilitation Center. She was 82.
The daughter of the late William Jahn and Viola Henk Jahn, she was born October 13, 1931 in Jersey City, NJ. She was the widow of James R. Schoonmaker who predeceased her on February 14, 1999.
Carol will be remembered for her devotion to children and family, which began when she was just 18 years old and she and her best girlfriends would visit the children's hospital in the Bronx every weekend providing hugs, homemade snacks, books and toys to children. It continued with her entry, by marriage, into a large family full of children, grandchildren and, eventually, great-grandchildren, and with the birth of her daughter. Carol couldn't think of a better way to spend a day than caring for children or surrounded by the large family she cherished so deeply.
Survivors include six daughters: Jennifer Candela & her husband Paul of Rock Hill, Michelle Albrecht of Smallwood, Nadine Swift & her partner John Kardell of Red Bank, NJ, Jay Wood & her husband Rick of Monticello, Linda Wilkinson & her partner Terry McGrath of Wurtsboro and Marylene Massey & her husband Wayne of Hollywood, FL; a son: Richard Schoonmaker & his wife Nancy of Forestburgh; five grandchildren: Amie Weaver, Michael Hess, Tiffany VanEtten, Adam Wood and Tracy Israel; eight great-grandchildren; a sister: Helen Wall of Manteo, NC; a brother: Robert Jahn of Forestburgh; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two grandchildren: Michelle and Brian Wilkinson; and two brothers: Arthur Jahn and John O'Rourke.
