Obituary of Andre R. Caradec

André R. Caradec was born in Tregunc Brittany, France, the son of the late Christopher and Victorine Quentel Caradec. André passed away peacefully at home on November 25, 2013 with his wife by his side. He was 92.
André was a World War II veteran. He served three and a half years as a French Merchant Mariner until Hitler's troops marched through France at which time André's captains brought the three ships, the Normandy, ile de France and Port Royal to the US so Hitler wouldn't get the ships. At that point André joined the US Army and soon after received his US citizenship. He was a talented stone mason with the BAC Local 5 NY and was also a code enforcer for the Town of Mamakating and Village of Wurtsboro; and a member of the American Legion Post #1266, Mamakating.
André is survived by his loving wife of 71 years: Yvonne Caradec; his daughter: Andrée Sherman; his son: Raymond Caradec; three grandchildren: Henry Sherman (Erin) of Texas, Glenne Sherman of Wurtsboro and Christopher Caradec (Mindy) of PA; four great grandchildren: Ryan Fuller, Brittany Fuller, Sophia Gowans and Shelbie Sherman; Cousins: Robert & Joan Ross and children. Nieces and nephews, especially Jean Pierre and Annie Rioual and their children; grand nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews and a great-great-great nephew Hugo all residing in Brittany, France. He was predeceased by his father and mother; his brother Pierre Caradec; sister-in-law Arlene; and his son-in-law Glenn Sherman.
Family & friends are invited to gather on Saturday, November 30 from 4-7pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. Pastor Bob Meyer for the Community Church of Wurtsboro will perform the eulogy at 6:30pm at the funeral home.
