Obituary of Matthew Peter Motl

Matthew Peter Motl of Monticello, a self-employed businessman and lifelong resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2020 in Middletown. He was 78.
The son of the late Edwin George Motl and June Cunningham Motl, he was born July 19, 1941 in Monticello.
A veteran, Matthew honorably served two years in the Army, stationed in Alaska and South Korea, following graduation from Monticello High School. He enjoyed ice skating, bowling and golf. He taught ice skating at the Laurel's Hotel in Sackett Lake and spent time helping new golfers at Eddy Farm Golf Course in Port Jervis. Matthew was hardworking and spent the majority of his years in various businesses, including bartending at the Concord, owning and operating Johnson's Oil, Early Bird News, Rialto Liquor Store and the Perfecta Bar. His last endeavor was Matthew's Car Service where he provided a livery service to members of the community until he became ill.
He is survived by his siblings: Emil & his wife Eileen, Mary Jane, J.T. & his wife Kathy, and Doris; his nieces and nephews: Karen Bigelman & her husband Kevin, Veronica McElroy & her husband Dennis, Phillip Motl, and Edwin Motl & his wife Amanda; many great nieces and nephews; and his stepchildren: William Mason and Lisa Wood. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Lois Ann Costa; and a brother: Phillip, twin to Mary Jane.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, February 24 from 4 to 7 pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 25 at 12:00 noon at St. Peter's Church, Broadway and Liberty Street, in Monticello with Fr. Timothy S. Wiggins officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Monticello.
