Quick to criticize, quick to praise. Beloved curmudgeon, mentor, friend, and hero. Now teaching the angels to fly well trimmed.

I meet Dick while learning to fly gliders at Wurtsboro. It was a delight to talk with him about some of his experiences. He is part of the rich mosaic of aviation history and his contributions as a military aviator, flight instructor, and tow pilot are enriched all who came in contact with him. We are diminished.

Rick, your father is a great man, he always took the time to share and listen from one veteran to another, the stories he told were amazing and I'm fortunate to have him shared some of them with Patricia and I. His tenacity and flying skills set a fine example for others to aspire to.
May God bless you and your family - and may Dick be held in his hand on his final glide path to the LZ he so well deserves.
Blessings Paul and Patricia Norden

Dear Rick,
I am deeply saddened to learn that your Dad has passed away. He certainly was tough, yet always a gentleman, and I will fondly remember him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Mom. With heartfelt sympathy, Tammy Gubser (previously from the Blue Sky Homes office)

Dick taught me to fly in the mid 70s. He would muse that it was his lingering regret, especially when he had to tow me.

I was very sad to hear of Dick's passing in that he was a good friend. I knew him at Wurtsboro for about 50 years; and he towed me many times. We shared stories and many cigars. I know he will be missed. My sincerest condolences.

I've known Dick for about 5 years.
I earned his respect each time he observed me inspecting the tow rope and release mechanism on his plane. I did this every morning before I flew and he complimented me on occasion for my diligence.
I earned his ire during one gusty tow where we were weaving between dark and ominous clouds. We were rocking and rolling and I was having a blast.
On the other hand, Dick was trying to signal me to release. I didn't notice, what with the gusts and all. It was a wild ride with a great soaring flight after the release. But I paid for it once back on the ground. Ouch.
I flew behind him every weekend until he could fly no more. I listened to his WWII stories and imagined those days with him. We cracked some jokes and commiserated about some of the flying shenanigans we witnessed while sitting at the picnic tables. And, we both enjoyed some cigar smoke (me, second hand).
Dick Padgett was one hell of a tow pilot, one I won't soon forget. May he rest in peace.
