Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Carol Kay Lane, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away at home surrounded by her family on January 11, 2019. She was 89 and a lifetime resident of Monticello. Carol was born in Monticello on December 20, 1929, to the late John P. Mapes and Lela Scheuren Mapes. She was given her first name because she was a Christmas baby. At her death, she was the longest tenured member of the United Methodist Church of Monticello, having joined the church when she was six years old. She served the church in many capacities: Altar Guild president, Wesleyan Service Guild secretary, a founding mother and board member of Tiny Tot's Preschool, and church trustee. To aid her husband in the William J. Lane Insurance Agency, she obtained her New York State insurance broker's license, and sat on the board of directors for the Callicoon Cooperative Insurance Company in Jeffersonville. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Monticello and active at both the local and state level when William was Lieutenant Governor for New York State. Her chocolate cake and strawberry jello salad were the first dishes to be devoured at family reunions and church functions. She is survived by her husband and best friend of sixty five years, William J. Lane, at home; two daughters: Karen Rhodes and her husband Steven of Austin, TX, and Corinne Lane and her husband Robert Field of Bloomingburg, NY; a son: John Lane and his wife Kelly of Bloomfield, NY; two grandsons: William J. Lane and Michael J. Lane; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers: John F. Mapes and Barth E. Mapes. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, January 14, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway, Monticello. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, at 11:00 am at the United Methodist Church of Monticello, 445 Broadway, Monticello. Cremation will follow and interment of her ashes will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty. Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello, NY. For additional information or to send an online condolence, please visit www.kennyfuneralhome.com.
