Obituary of Ruth M. Bernstrom

Ruth Margaret Bernstrom, a longtime resident of Pine Bush and Bloomingburg, NY, passed away on Saturday, January 5,2019. She attained the amazing age of 106 years old. Ruth was born at home in Queens New York on November 12. 1912 to Edward and Marie Shellard Bernstrom . Ruth graduated from Jamaica High School and Browns Business School in Jamaica New York . During the depression she worked for her father's engineering firm Torgenson and Bernstrom, located in Grand Central station. Ruth was later employed by the Pine Bush National Bank as a bookkeeper for 7 years and retired from Mastercraft Tie factory in Pine Bush after 11 years. After moving to Pine Bush full time in the early 1950's, Ruth and her brother Ed ran a chicken farm selling eggs to local supermarkets . Ruth was predeceased by her sister Mabel Schmidt and brother Edward Bernstrom Jr. Survivors include her niece Cheryl Hultslander and her husband William; two great nephews Brian Hultslander and children William, Brianna, and Brayden, and Kevin Hultslander and wife Gina . Ruth will be forever remembered for her love of all animals, especially cats. The family wishes to thank the wonderful people with Hospice of Orange and Sullivan. The care, compassion and support that Ruth received, and the rest of her family too, was amazing and much appreciated. A huge thanks to Kristine, Sue, Eric, Sarah, Chaplin Gary, Diane, Doctor Spencer and Doctor Dinsmore and to many others who assisted. A huge thank you to her 24 hour caregivers Renee, Donna and Terry who worked hard to keep Ruth comfortable and safe to the end. She loved you all. Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, January 11th from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the VanInwgen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with a memorial service starting at 7:30pm. Interment of her ashes will be held privately at the New Prospect Cemetery in Pine Bush.
