Obituary of Allen Mendels

Please share a memory of Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Allen Mendels, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 6, 2019 at the age of 79.

Born February 21, 1939, Allen was a well-known businessman, an avid outdoors enthusiast, and a lifetime member of the Monticello Fire Department. As owner of the Nugget Restaurant for 30 years, he established himself as a man of integrity who was respected by staff, peers and patrons alike. Friends he made during the early years remained friends throughout his lifetime.

Allen was an avid golfer who participated in numerous leagues and events over the years. He always looked forward to his Saturday morning match with friends, and to his golf outings and Myrtle Beach trips with his wife, Deanna.

When the golf and fishing seasons were over, the hunting gear came out. He valued his time with friends at hunting camp. While he wasn’t usually the one who brought in the venison, he was always a focal point there who helped keep things running.

In retirement, countless projects kept him busy. He found immense joy in helping friends and family, and he could always be counted on to lend a hand or step in when needed.

Allen is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Deanna; son Jay (Elisa); daughter Robyn Feltman; grandchildren Mikayla, Ryan, Fiona and Michael; sister Roz Gitlin (John DiGangi), and numerous extended family and friends.

Donations in Allen’s memory can be sent to the Sullivan County SPCA, PO Box 995, Rock Hill, NY 12775, or to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 10 at 11:00am at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway in Monticello.  Burial will follow at the Wurtsboro Hebrew Cemetery.
