Vera Elaine Bernhardt, 87, of Monticello, NY passed away Friday August 3, 2018 at St. Mary's Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY. Born in Monticello, NY on November 19, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Stella Hulse Barber. Vera received her education from the Carman and Monticello Schools and was last employed as a bookkeeper, at the Heritage Inn, in Monticello. In her earlier years, she enjoyed being involved with the Girl Scouts, trapshooting, Monticello Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the model airplane club that she started with her children and neighborhood children. Vera was a life member of the Bailey-Richmond Post 9588 and the NRA. She was also a member of the Monticello Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was a past president and secretary of Tri-State WBA (Woman's Bowling Association) and was instrumental in starting a youth bowling league at Kiamesha Lanes. She was a certified lane inspector. She won numerous awards in bowling including being inducted in NYSW 600 Bowling Club Hall of Fame. Vera's greatest love was her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Vera was married to Leland Bernhardt on February 16, 1947. He passed away on October 5, 1992. She is survived by two daughters, Glenna Price (Vince) of Monticello, and Dawn Riley (Pat) of Amsterdam, son-in-law, James Herbert of Ferndale, NY; one sister, Wanita Thomas of Prescott, Arizona, seven grandchildren, James Price (Nancy) and Cathy Hurney of Monticello, Leeann Fahnestock (Chris) of Matamoras, PA; Crystal Delfino (John) of Monticello, Karen Escobar (Edward) of Monroe, NY; Michael Osborn (Cathy) of Monticello, and Shawn Herbert (Krystal) of Liberty, NY; fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Nieces and nephews also survive. Vera was also predeceased by her daughter, Wendy Herbert and two sisters, Myrtle Price and Madeline Lewis. Cremation was held at Park View Crematorium in Schenectady, NY. Visitation will be held Saturday August 11, 2018 from 12 to 2p.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, Inc., 401 Broadway Monticello, NY. 12701. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Vera's name may be made to a charity of one's choice. Vera's family would also like to thank Dr. John Fedullo, Dr Michael Sheridan, the staff at Wilkinson Residential Healthcare Facility, St. Mary's Healthcare and the Community Hospice of Amsterdam for the kindness and compassion she received.
