Charles Francis Hampel, "Charlie" of Wurtsboro, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2018 after a brief illness at the Ellenville Regional Hospital. He was 72. Charlie was born October 23, 1945 to Elizabeth Ulrich and Herman Hampel, attended Saddlebrook High School, and joined the United States Navy after high school. In 1966 he met the love of his life Cheryl A. Tomlinson and they were married on May 9, 1970. They moved to Wurtsboro in 1974 and started their family in 1978 with sons Steven and Evan. Charlie worked for Ford Motors in Mahwah and then later became a well-known face at Future Vision in Wurtsboro. He was also a constable for the Town of Mamakating until 1991 and the animal control officer for the town and found great joy in helping others and caring for the animals he saved. He retired from the NYS Thruway Authority in Harriman in 2015. Until his illness he recently worked at Auto Zone in Middletown. He was a member of the Community Church of Wurtsboro, where he was a former deacon and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He brought great joy to others with his beautiful voice. Charlie is survived by his wife of 48 years: Cheryl Hampel; his sons: Steven & his domestic partner Tara, and Evan & his wife Missy; a sister: Etta DeMarco & her husband Tony; brothers-in-law: Craig Tomlinson (Louise), and Thomas Tomlinson (Kathy); grandchildren: Christopher, Brooklynn and Paige Manning; nieces: Laurie Nuziale (David), and Lauren and Ashley Tomlinson; nephews: Anthony DeMarco (Stacey), TJ Tomlinson (Tia Allyn) and Alex Tomlinson; and several cousins, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother: Herman; mother-in-law: Bernie Yesulitis; father-in-law: Thomas Yesulitis; and a brother-in-law: William Tomlinson. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, June 7 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral service will be held on Friday, June 8 at 11am at the Community Church of Wurtsboro, 134 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Kathy Vollano Preaching Elder, officiating.
