Obituary of Christof J. Wingenter

Christof Jakob Wingenter of Rock Hill, a retired union carpenter, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. He was 84. Chris was born in Speicher, Germany to Nikolaus and Maria Fuchs Wingenter. He immigrated to Port Chester, NY in 1957, living in Thornwood, NY until 2000, at which time he retired to Rock Hill. He served in the US Army from 1958-1964 as a private first class, including service in the Korean War from 1958-1960 (10th Division). He worked as a carpenter by trade and foreman on many jobs (1971-1986). He was proud of his military service and frequently wore his veteran hat and American eagle. A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wurtsboro, Chris was a 3rd Degree member of the Mamakating Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society and the Mamakating American Legion Post. He was known as Uncle Chris, Opa or Dad. A Bayern Munich soccer fan, his humor, quiet strength, smile, rugged hands and love of sweets will be missed by all. Eiche Liebe Diche Alles! He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years: Mary Sexton Wingenter, originally of Ballytigue County Limerick, Ireland; his children: Kristel Wingenter Halton & spouse Paul Halton, and Franz J. Wingenter and his fiancé Nikki Sordi and her daughter Annamarie Sordi; his grandchildren: Emmet Nikolaus Halton, Margreta Nicole Halton and Raina Chiarella Wingenter; a sister: Elschen Wingenter Giles & husband Gerald, and their children Pamela Giles Smith and Ben Giles; and many nieces and nephews in Germany. He was predeceased by two children: Nikolaus Christof Wingenter (2002) and Nicole Marie Wingenter (2004); a brother: Robert Wingenter; and a sister: Margretchen Wingenter-Klömfass. Family and friends are invited to gather on Sunday, March 25 from 2:00 to 5:00pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 26 at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Family Council at the Sullivan Co.
