Obituary of Walter Raymond Rogers

Walter Raymond Rogers of Wurtsboro, NY entered into rest at his home on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 85 years of age. Born June 26, 1928 to the late George R. and Grace Sawyer Rogers at their home in the hamlet of Phillipsport, in the Mamakating Valley in the shadow of the Shawangunk Ridge. Walt loved motorcycling and airplane flying. As a young boy he learned to love airplanes while living with his family at the Wurtsboro Airport. Later in life he earned his commercial pilot’s license and flew parachute jumpers out of local airports. His love of motorcycles took him on many trips and adventures. He was a past treasurer of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, Chapter IV. Walt was a graduate of Middletown High School in Middletown, NY and served his country and community proudly. He served six years in Battery A, 170th Field Artillery Battalion, 27th Infantry; he was a 1979 graduate of Chester Police Academy and served on the law enforcement force of several local communities. He was a 20yr member of the Bloomingburg Fire Department where he served as First Lt, First Assistant Chief and as a commissioner of the Bloomingburg Fire District. He helped guide the growth of his community as a Trustee of the Village of Bloomingburg and as the Town of Mamakating Building Inspector. Walt was also a master carpenter and spent most of his life working in construction. In his later years he worked as a clerk at R.S.R. Corp and contractor for the U.S. Mail Service. He retired at age 78 because of a disability and spent the rest of his life working on carpentry projects around his home and enjoying the companionship of his beloved wife, Eileen and their miniature Schnauzer, J.J. and cat, Grey Buddy. Walter is survived by his wife, Eileen at home; son, David Rogers and his wife, Catherine of Napanoch, NY; daughter, Linda Rogers of Burlingham, NY; son, Charles Comer and his wife, Magaly of South Hackensack, NJ; son Christopher Comer of Woodland Park, NJ; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters, Doris Lindsay and Jeanne Taman; and infant brother, Cleon. Friends and family may call on Monday, August 5, 2013 from 6-8pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home Funeral, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral service will take place at 7:30pm Monday evening. Burial will be in Bloomingburg Cemetery.
