Obituary of Eugene B. Young

Eugene B. Young Jr., 90, of Wurtsboro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 7, at the Orange Regional Medical Center. Eugene was born on April 13, 1927 to Eugene B. Young Sr. and Jane (Gardella) Young in Brooklyn, New York. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Evelyn (Miller) Young; his sister Jane Van Acker and her daughter Elizabeth Krupp; his three sons: Eugene B. Young III and wife Cheryl of Syracuse, Henry Young and wife Nancy of Wurtsboro, and Michael Young and wife Charlene of Wurtsboro; six grandchildren: Miranda and husband Chuck, Gregory and wife Jawhara, Brently, Erin and husband Jon, Colleen, and Matthew; four great-grandchildren: Emily, Cameron, Brennan, and Fiona; and also true friends, Amos Decker and wife Kelly. Eugene was predeceased by his sister Betty Rose Finnerty, and brother-in-law Larry Van Acker. We would like to give a special thanks to all the caregivers who helped our father during his illness. Eugene was a proud WWII Navy Veteran, and was stationed in the Pacific on the island of New Guinea. He worked for thirty years as a tree trimmer and foreman for Orange & Rockland Utilities. He served as Mayor and Trustee of Wurtsboro, helped establish the village park, and initiated the planting of many trees throughout the village. One of the many activities he truly enjoyed was coaching Tuesday night men's basketball at the Chase school for over forty years, from which he made many friends. Our father was truly a good man and "memorable character" who loved his family, friends, and Wurtsboro very much. He also had a strong faith which is certainly helping him now along his journey. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Monday, November 13 at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 14 at 10am at Saint Joseph's Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Wurtsboro. Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Wurtsboro.
