Obituary of Carmen Rosa Zayas

Carmen Rosa Zayas of Harris, a retired self-employed childcare provider, started her journey to Heaven on Thursday, August 31, 2017. She was 80. The daughter of the late José Cabeza and Blanca Portalin, she was born April 22, 1937 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Nothing meant more to Carmen than her family and the Lord. She spent every morning in prayer drawing from the guidance of Mother Angelica. Carmen freely gave her love caring for grandchildren and many others. She was happiest cooking for family, sneaking sweets, laughing and telling family stories and reminiscing about her beloved Puerto Rico. She is survived by her loving children, J. Eddie Zayas of Killeen, TX; Miguel and Geralyn Zayas of Stafford, VA; Carmen and David Gonzalez of PR; Carlos and Carolyn Zayas of Montgomery, NY; Ramón Zayas of Killeen, TX; and David Zayas of Monticello, NY. She also leaves her sisters Ali, Fefa and Cuca and her brother in law, Benny. Carmen also leaves her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Eduardo, her sister, Sule Huertas and her great granddaughter, Betzaida Torres. Family & friends are invited to gather on Friday, September 8 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 9 at 11am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello. Burial will follow at Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
