Obituary of Earl W. Smith Jr.

Earl William Smith Jr., a retired security supervisor at SUNY Sullivan, died Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at his home in Monticello, surrounded by his family. He was 71.

The son of the late Earl W. Smith Sr. and Dorothy Kolb Smith, he was born February 17, 1946 in Camden, NJ.

Earl was a veteran of the United States Navy serving two tours on the Intrepid aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. And avid hunter and fisherman, Earl was a true and loyal family man who cherished spending time with his grandchildren. If you ever needed anything fixed, he was always there with his tools in hand and wouldn't stop until the job was done.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 52 years: Elaine Vindenes Smith, at home; a daughter: Christine Sullivan & her husband Timothy of Bloomingburg; three grandchildren: Timothy (Cassondra), Travis (Allison) and Siobhan Sullivan; a sister: Dotty French of Walden; and nephews: Gary Montieth (Sharon) and their son Ryan, and Gene Montieth.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, August 11 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 12 at 11am at St. John's Lutheran Church, 391 Mount Hope Road in Middletown with Pastor Peter Rustico officiating. Following the services, it was his wish to be cremated and have his ashes spread at Montauk Point, his favorite fishing spot.
